We’ll miss Joe Thomas and all the rumors that the Browns are going to trade him

Joe Thomas suffered a season-ending injury last Sunday, putting an end to our favorite annual NFL tradition. For the first time we can remember, there will be no rumors about the Browns shopping Thomas for a potential trade.

Sports Business Journal reported that since the fall TV season opened on Sept. 25, NFL game viewership is 2.5 times bigger than broadcast prime-time viewership. And, 17 of the top 20 shows that have aired since the start of football season are football game coverage. Also, according to Standard Media Index, money spent on advertising during NFL games increased by 2% in September.

So the Broncos pretty much have to go into max protect and be more conservative than they would like to be with the big-armed Siemian. They might have to go to more dinking and dunking with more multiple-back sets. The objective to get out of the slump needs to be keeping it simple, protecting the ball and trying to win field-position games.

The good news is Denver’s defensive dominance can be a big factor. The bad news is the Broncos have little margin for error there and on special teams. One or two lapses in allowing big plays when the offense isn’t making any can cost them. The latter has been more of an issue.

The differences in Los Angeles were the long receiving (42 yards) and punt returning (65 yards) scores from Travis Benjamin. Most of the other stats were similar among the two teams.

Even with Joe Woods improving on where Wade Phillips left off with the defense, McCoy is dealing with the same limitations as Kubiak had in 2016, when the Broncos went 9-7 and fell short of the playoffs.49ers_210_732fade0133520ad-150x150
