Rookies Dak Prescott and Ezekiel Elliott will take away each other’s votes for Offensive Rookie of the Year

Romo’s back is healed and he’s ready to return. Only problem is, the kid hasn’t let up. Prescott has the Cowboys at 8-1 and in first place in the NFC East. Romo will trade in his game-day sweatsuit for a uniform and pads this week at home against Andy Levitre Authentic Womens Jersey Baltimore, but he will not start. Practice is likely to be different for him this week, too. Weeks ago, he was tough to find, throwing on a back field with equipment staff, tucked into a corner near where Jones’ helicopter lands at the team’s spanking-new practice facility. This week, he should be out there taking Sanchez’s snaps, sliding in with Alfred Morris and the backup offensive line after Prescott, Elliott and the starters have their turn.

The Cowboys haven’t ruled out the possibility of Romo starting for them at some point this season, because why should they? Prescott could get hurt. He could struggle, as rookies do, especially as the length of the NFL season starts to affect them. Right now, given his track record, Romo is obviously the best backup quarterback in football, and the Cowboys feel as Austin Hooper Authentic Womens Jersey though they have an embarrassment of riches at the game’s most important position.

“I was ready to go,” Prescott said, simply, after hitting 17 of 23 passes for 116 yards and a touchdown that night. While no one expected it to matter right away, that readiness did not go unnoticed.

In calls around the league, five rookies drew the most mentions as budding stars, including Dallas’ dynamic duo of Dak Prescott and Ezekiel Elliott. Here’s who else made the list.

That was said in retrospect, though. In the days that followed this particular preseason game, Cowboys coaches talked of Prescott as a project. One said Romo’s injury would offer a rare chance for a rookie to get first-team reps. They believed the system in which Prescott played at Mississippi State would translate well in the pros, and they were starting to convince themselves they might be able to get by with him as Romo’s primary backup, though Kellen Moore was still in the picture and the plan for Prescott was education, not expectation.

“Just getting him that exposure right now is huge,” one Cowboys coach said in that final week of August, before they knew the severity of Romo’s back injury. “It gives you a good feeling about what’s to come.”

Los Angeles Rams coach Jeff Fisher made up his mind Tuesday morning and informed Case Keenum that Goff, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2016 NFL draft, would be his starting quarterback for Sunday’s home game against streaking Miami, a development that was first reported by ESPN’s Chris Mortensen. And anyone who has watched this team realizes why this needed to happen.

The strangest U.S. presidential election in recent memory had yet another strange moment on Monday night in New Hampshire when Republican candidate Donald Trump told the crowd that New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady had voted for him, and then Trump read a letter he said was from Patriots coach Bill Belichick in which Belichick praised Trump’s leadership, among other things.

Of course, many were dubious. Belichick took the time to write a letter? And it said things like, “You have dealt with an unbelievable and slanted media and have come out beautifully. You’ve proven to be the ultimate fighter”?

Obama dubbed James “one of the great Tony McDaniel Authentic Jersey players of all time,” but the president also represented perhaps the greatest player of all time, Michael Jordan, and his beloved Chicago Bulls.

“By knocking off the Warriors, the [Cavs] cemented the 1996 Bulls as the greatest team of all time,” Obama said. “So your president thanks you for that.”

ESPN FC’s Adrian Healey, Jeff Carlisle and Tom Marshall assess the tactics of the U.S. and Mexico ahead of their WCQ match.
There are other lineup decisions to be made for the Yanks. Since starting center-back Geoff Cameron is unavailable because of a knee injury he picked up playing for English Premier League side Stoke City, Klinsmann will have to find a partner for the left-footed John Brooks. The leading candidates appear to be Steve Birnbaum and Omar Gonzalez.

Gonzalez plays for Pachuca in Liga MX, but Mexico’s top flight has supplied just 10 players to coach Juan Carlos Osorio’s current roster. But Birnbaum has been ahead of Gonzalez in Klinsmann’s pecking order for most of 2016. And while Birnbaum hasn’t played since Oct. 27, when D.C. United were eliminated from the MLS postseason, he’s done his best to remain in game shape.

“We had a lot of the [D.C.] coaching staff stay behind with me during the last week after we lost in the playoffs,” Birnbaum said. “They kept me fit, and I did some technical work and trained with the academy a little bit, and then I was ready to rock once I got here.”

Elsewhere, in-form Timmy Chandler could replace DeAndre Yedlin at right-back, although that would sacrifice even more of the continuity Klinsmann’s back four built during the summer’s successful Copa America showing. There’s also a chance Klinsmann could opt for Tyler Lockett Authentic Jersey playmaker Sacha Kljestan in the midfield alongside Michael Bradley, at the expense or either Jones or Alejandro Bedoya.

The White Sox finished fourth in the American League Central with a 78-84 record this past season and haven’t finished above .500 since 2012. Manager Robin Ventura resigned at the end of the season, and Rick Renteria was chosen to replace him.

While a Sale trade would be a clear indication that the White Sox plan to rebuild rather than try to make a playoff push in 2017, Hahn declined to address which way the team might be leaning.

“We have a pretty firm sense internally about what we want to accomplish,” Hahn said. “But I’ve been saying this for months back in Chicago: There’s just not any advantage to us to declare publicly exactly what we’re trying to accomplish.

“Once we start making deals, we’ll explain precisely the rationale behind them. Are we looking to add and compete right now, or are we looking for a more long-term benefit? The last few years, we’ve taken a shorter-term, stopgap type of approach, and obviously that hasn’t borne fruit.”

“Instead of getting loaded down thinking, ‘In this coverage I’m going here, in that coverage I’m going there,’ with so many hybrid players, so many variations of schemes and so much pressure up front and all the things that defenses can do, the way to combat all that is to see spots,” Ryan said.

A lot of people ripped him for that statement. It Devin Taylor Authentic Womens Jersey seemed like a regression or a waving of the white flag — nonsense that a spread quarterback would say. What quarterback reinvents himself by announcing that he no longer reads defenses? But when the season started, and Ryan began to light up opponents at a rate unprecedented in his career, it was clear that this wasn’t a concession at all. It was a breakthrough.

“I’m pretty surprised an old man like me can win the Gold Glove,” said the 37-year-old Beltre, who was thrilled Moreland won as well.

“I think I’m happier for him than for me because for Eric Ebron Authentic Womens Jersey the last couple of years, he has played such a great defensive first base and was never recognized,” Beltre said. “Most of my mistakes are throwing the ball and Mitch has saved me so many errors and makes things look easier for me.”

The 22-year-old Lindor became the first Indians player to win a Gold Glove since outfielder Grady Sizemore in 2008, and their second shortstop after Omar Vizquel won every year from 1994 to 2001.

Votes are submitted in September by managers and coaches who cannot choose their own players. Three years ago, Rawlings added a sabermetric component to the Gold Glove selection process as well.

Top Rank promoter Bob Arum said newly crowned welterweight world titleholder Manny Pacquiao will “definitely” fight again in the spring and said “I give it 75 percent” that he will face Floyd Mayweather in a rematch.

Pacquiao, elected to the Philippines Senate in May, came out of a brief retirement to handily outpoint Jessie Vargas on Saturday night at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas to regain the welterweight belt he lost to Mayweather by unanimous decision in May 2015 in their record-shattering mega fight that generated a record $600 million in total revenue.

Mayweather so far has remained in the retirement he announced after beating Andre Berto in September 2015, but the signs are there that it may not last much longer. Mayweather showed up with his daughter at ringside Saturday to watch Pacquiao, who invited him to the fight.

Floyd Mayweather was seated Christine Michael Jersey ringside with his daughter for Manny Pacquiao’s welterweight title challenge against Jessie Vargas on Saturday night at the Thomas & Mack Center.

Making the first fight dragged on for a tedious five years of “will they or won’t they.” A second fight wouldn’t take nearly as long to put together if Mayweather wants it, Arum said.

“Floyd came to the fight and he was very Christine Michael Sr Jersey friendly with [Top Rank president] Todd [duBoef] and some of our staff,” Arum told ESPN on Monday. “Now, that doesn’t mean that the fight will happen, but if it does, it won’t take a long time to make because the animosity that was there before the first fight is gone. There’s no more animosity between the camps.”

Arum has since settled a $100 million antitrust lawsuit he filed against Al Haymon, Mayweather’s adviser.

“It was so tense last time, but it won’t be that way now because everyone can get along,” said Arum, who promoted Mayweather for most of his career before they had a falling out that Haymon was in the middle of.

“Like everyone else, I’m guessing there will be a rematch. He did come to the fight,” Arum said. “I give it 75 percent. Do I know it’s gonna happen? No. Do I know if Floyd wants the fight? No. I know nothing more than the public knows at this point and what I observed.”

There are just a handful of quality receiving tight ends in the league. Tony Gonzalez and Antonio Gates used to be the gold standard, anomalies in a league that used tight ends primarily as blockers. As teams realized what an asset a sure-handed tight end could be, it changed the game.

The difference between Dan Carpenter Authentic Womens Jersey Gonzalez and Gates and Rob Gronkowski is that Gronk is also a powerful blocker. He’s not only the best tight end in the game today, he’s also the most complete player at the position, whether Bills linebacker Zach Brown believes he is or not.

“As far as blocking, no, I Doug Flutie Authentic Womens Jersey do not think he’s one of the best,” Brown said. “Bennett is probably a better blocker.”

Bill Belichick disagrees. Belichick said Gronkowski is one of the best blocking tight ends he’s ever coached, and that Gronkowski takes pride in it.

“There are a lot of plays Rob comes to the sideline and he’s more excited about a block he made on the series than a catch he made, which a lot of tight ends I’ve coached I wouldn’t put in that category,” Belichick said.

Gronkowski passed former Patriots wide receiver Stanley Morgan in New England’s record books with his 69th career touchdown, and at age 27, he should have plenty of career ahead of him to establish some other high marks.

Again, what’s key about this category is the number of games it’s taken Gronkowski to get there. It took 270 games for Gonzalez and 109 for Winslow. It’s entirely possible that Gronkowski could match Winslow next week, in his 87th game.

Bills coach Rex Ryan acknowledged Gronkowski’s skill.

“He’s pretty danged good,” Ryan said. “He’s a phenomenal player and he’s been that way for a long time.”

With his age and the pace Gronkowski has set, he’s likely to continue to be that way for a long time, too.

The Celtic fans had been singing incessantly from before the first whistle and their afternoon looked like being one party, but County had other ideas. made two good runs forward and got a shot away on goal at the second attempt, but the gave Forster a comfortable save. The comeback started the 30th minute with a spectacular first-time Johnny Unitas Authentic Womens Jersey effort from Munro. Celtic initially cleared Iain Vigurs free-kick but Mihael Kovacevic returned a high ball into box. Kelvin won the aerial challenge but his header fell for Munro and the defender unleashed a left-footed strike into the top corner past a helpless Forster.

County were level six minutes later when Vigurs nutmegged Mulgrew on the right wing and skipped round Joe Ledley before hanging a cross to the far post which Josh Ferguson Authentic Womens Jersey held up the wind. Morrow and McGeouch challenged for the ball and the County forward reacted quickest to force the ball home from close range. Stokes should have put Celtic back front with the last kick of the half but he drilled wide from 15 yards after Miku had found him unmarked. Vigurs curled a free-kick not far wide before the second half settled into early rhythm of County defending but breaking dangerously. The hosts had a let-off after Beram Kayal played Hooper through. Fraser palmed out the striker’s shot and it bounced off the head of Kovacevic and off the top of the bar. But had a bigger escape after making a mess of his header back to Forster following ‘s deep cross. The Nigerian set up Martin but the County midfielder snatched at his and hit it straight at Forster. Celtic were finding it difficult to break County down and their fans were much quieter as Kovacevic, Kettlewell and Munro all hit ambitious efforts wide as County gained the ascendancy. Wohlfarth had a great with 10 minutes left when Lawson played the ball through. The got there before Forster but guided the ball just wide of the goal. Hooper turned and shot just past but that was a rare foray forward for Celtic and the hosts snatched a famous victory when Wohlfarth reached a ball by Evangelos Ikonomou to head past the onrushing Forster.

New York Islanders scored a pair of first-period goals and the United States never trailed a 3 World Championship victory over Slovenia the Czech Republic. Detroit Red Wings prospect Larkin had no shots and even plus-minus rating 12 of ice time. Our line has been working well for quite a few games now, said a story on the IIHF website. I ‘t know what the secret is – it would be nice if we did – but I think we’ve played well from the get-go to create chances and capitalize on them. When you get a few early goals you build that chemistry. opened the scoring 4 into the game and made it 2 with 3 left the first period. Slovenia cut the deficit half on a goal by Ales Music 6 into the second period before USA got insurance marker from Eichel of Boston University seconds into the third. assisted on Eichel’s goal, giving him six goals and three assists six games. The victory gave the U.S. 15 points Group B. That’s good for first place, one point ahead of Russia with one game remaining the preliminary round. USA completes the preliminary round Tuesday against Slovakia and Red Wings forwards Tatar and Jurco.

“Am I as fast as Larkin or McDavid? Not even close,” Vanek said. “I never was and never will be. But I can read the game, I have hockey IQ — which, to me, is something that is leaving the game a little.”

The Red Wings have started 6-2-0, in large part because of veterans Vanek and Green. It’s important to note that while their even-strength save percentage and shooting percentage are near the top of the league, that won’t continue. Detroit controls only 45.6 percent Brandon Saad Jersey of its even-strength shot attempts, a rate that has to improve for it to keep winning. So, despite the early success, there are red flags for the Red Wings.

“There’s now a lottery. The first four picks are Cam Atkinson Jersey lottery picks. You can be the worst team in the league and get the fifth pick in the draft,” Holland said. “Each year, we go forward, it becomes more and more a parity league. Why is that? Players come out of the entry level and they go from entry-level contracts to $5-$6 million.”

The Red Wings signed Steve Ott, 34, to a one-year, $800,000 deal on July 1 in the hopes that the veteran would bring personality and spark to Detroit’s dressing room.

This isn’t the same system that that Penguins and Blackhawks had to navigate on the way to landing elite players — and neither are the contract structures.

The Red Wings have considered all that as they march forward. Their solution is to keep doing what they’ve always done: just keep winning. Draft well from the position in which you’re placed and make the kids earn the playing time.

Detroit signed Green last year, and he has seven points in eight games this season. Red Wings coach Jeff Blashill said Green’s teammates are learning how to play to his strengths more, to take advantage of his skating.

Green said it took him half a season to get comfortable on a new team. Now, here he is.

“We’ve changed up a few things, but mostly it’s a confidence thing,” Green said. “We are detailed in our assignments, and it has shown this season.”

Both Holland and Blashill phoned Vanek when he was a free agent and made their pitch to get him to Detroit. They wanted him playing in front of the net. They loved the idea of another right-handed shot. They realize he’s not a guy who needs 18 minutes per game to put up points. Right now, he’s averaging 13:11, the lowest of his career. He has eight points in seven games. It’s been a great fit.

The New England Patriots won the AFC East last season for the seventh straight year, finishing with a 12-4 record and making it to the AFC Championship game. Now, though, the team is heading into training camp under the shadow of Tom Brady’s impending four-game suspension. This creates opportunities for another team, perhaps the New York Jets, to make a run for the division title.

The Jets finally settled their Jordan Norwood Authentic Womens Jersey quarterback controversy, bringing back Ryan Fitzpatrick on a one-year deal Wednesday. With their man back under center, they’ll aim to improve on an 10-6 campaign. The Buffalo Bills are also hoping to make the playoffs after a 16-year drought, while the Miami Dolphins are counting on Ryan Tannehill and the offense to take a step forward this season.

At the start of almost every season, Bills head Justin Simmons Authentic Womens Jersey coach Rex Ryan guarantees that his team will make the playoffs. But this year, the typically boisterous Ryan is taking a more subdued approach heading into training camp.

Perhaps Ryan has an interest in tampering down expectations: Club ownership reportedly gave him a playoff ultimatum in January, though he denies this is a make-or-break season. The Bills failed to gain traction last year, finishing 8-8 and forcing Ryan to admit he set expectations too high.

But with a healthy LeSean McCoy in the backfield and the much-improved Tyrod Taylor at quarterback, the Bills’ offense has a chance to be dynamic in 2016. Sammy Watkins finished up his sophomore campaign in impressive fashion, too, asserting himself as one of the best downfield threats in the game — if he can stay healthy.

One of the biggest questions facing the Bills this summer was whether star cornerback Stephon Gilmore would hold out. The good news for the Bills is that Gilmore said earlier in the week that he would show up to training camp.

Contract talks between Drew Brees and the Saints aren’t going anywhere. Saints VP and GM Mickey Loomis said Wednesday that Brees and the team “have not made any progress” on a contract extension. That’s probably because they haven’t even talked about it in three months. Brees has a stunning $30 million cap hit this season, which also happens to be the last year of his deal.

Brees is 37. The Saints need to make this happen so they can quickly try and fill in a team around him and make another run at the playoffs before Brees’ window closes. They could tag him next year, but because he’s already been tagged twice that would cost more than $43 million for a one-year deal.

If they don’t want to recommit to the Brees, it’ll be the best quarterback to hit free agency since the Colts cut Peyton Manning in 2012. Teams will be tripping over themselves to court him in March.

How about a little Friday morning football talk? Yes, there is real football to discuss, or at least something like it, the preseason form. We’ll have more analysis and overreaction to Thursday’s games, but here’s a quick rundown.

This Garoppolo kid might be okay.

Saints rookie Michael Thomas just keeps making amazing catches.

Tampa’s kicker may have gotten off to a Britton Colquitt Jersey rough start, but the defensive line looks ready to go. Jameis Winston looked like he’s been working on his footwork and mechanics during the offseason.

The Falcons won, but the starting Cam Johnson Jersey offense looked like they thought it was still June. Not backup QB Matt Schaub though, he was aces.

We know Washington’s offense is going to be fine, but Thursday’s game offered some hope for the defense, too.

“We have been approached by no fewer than 20 individuals who traveled to the game to participate and be ready to enjoy the game,” Avenatti told AP. “And unfortunately they did not have the opportunity to enjoy the game, and as a result lost a significant amount of money.”

Refunds are being granted for all ticketholders, but Avenatti says that’s not good enough for fans who were informed the game was off just a few hours before it was scheduled to begin.

“They could have offered what these fans paid for the tickets and to reimburse them for any expenses incurred,” Avenatti said. “The league has a history of being cheap with its fans.”

NFL executive Troy Vincent accepted responsibility for the disaster, but until the league is also willing to accept responsibility for the travel costs those who intended to go to the game, it will have to deal with a group of unhappy fans.

People want their money back … and then some. I’m sure the NFL will make them jump through some hoops first.

Oh, and today is the 10th anniversary of Roger Goodell being named the commissioner. Fitting.

Before training camp started, Philadelphia Eagles head coach Doug Pederson said Carson Wentz would likely be inactive at the start of the season. And now, roughly six weeks later, Wentz will be the Eagles’ starting quarterback Week 1.

Pederson announced Wentz will be Brandon Thomas Jersey under center when they take on the Cleveland Browns Sunday. The No. 2 overall pick suffered a hairline fracture in his ribs during Philadelphia’s preseason opener and didn’t return for the rest of the exhibition slate. Despite that, Pederson says he feels Wentz is ready to step in and start.

Wentz was enjoying his day off when he heard the news that he will start this week:

“He’s not ready, but he’s really, really Calvin Johnson Jersey made significant progress,” the Rams coach said. “He’s much better now than he was when we started.”

That’s elite coachspeak.

But Goff will get it turned around, right? The Rams can afford to be patient, right?

Here’s the problem. Who on the team’s coaching staff has any experience developing quarterbacks? Fisher’s history with quarterbacks is abysmal. The offensive coordinator is a tight ends coach. Quarterbacks coach Chris Weinke has experience working with preparing draft picks at IMG Academy, but he’s never coached a quarterback in the NFL.

Underscoring the coaching issue is the fact that Goff comes from an Air Raid offense in college, and Air Raid quarterbacks have not had much success in the NFL.

Worse, outstanding preseason play from Dak Prescott, a fourth-round pick, and Paxton Lynch, late first round, has overshadowed the first and second overall picks in the draft. It’s still too early to judge Goff’s career and the trade the Rams made to get him, but it’s not off to a very good start.
